Typhoon hits Tokyo

A powerful typhoon hit Tokyo today with furious gusts and heavy rains that killed at least six dead or missing before brushing the coast of northeastern Japan, affected by the tsunami of March.

 
Nuclear plant officials Fukushima Dai-ichi reported that the typhoon did not cause serious damage than some broken security cameras.

 
The police and the press in Tokyo reported six dead or missing after being swept away by overflowing rivers caused by Typhoon Roke.

 
About 260,000 homes in central Japan were left without electricity and the authorities had evacuated more than a million people in central and east.

 
The vortex of the storm, with sustained winds up to 145 kilometers per hour (90 mph), came ashore near the city of Hamamatsu, 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Tokyo. In the afternoon, passed north of the capital and headed towards northeastern Tohoku region on March 11, devastated by a tsunami and a tidal wave on 11 March.

 
The typhoon passed just west of the damaged nuclear plant Dai-ichi Fukushima, which is leaking a small amount of radiation.

 
Takeo Iwamoto, a spokesman for Tokyo Electric Company, which operates the nuclear plant, said the cooling system of the reactors, vital to keep them under control, was not affected by the typhoon.

 
He added that construction work near the plant were temporarily canceled and is working diligently to prevent leakage of radioactive water and other materials.

 
Upon suspension of train service in the capital, tens of thousands of passengers were stranded at the many stations in the city. Fire officials said there were three wounded in Tokyo. In the Shibuya district of winds toppled a tree, but nobody was injured.

 
Television pictures showed the pedestrian who walked with difficulty shaken by powerful winds.

 
The fire and emergency agency said a little more than a million people have been ordered to evacuate or councils in different parts of the country for fear of floods and landslides during the typhoon.

 
The city of Nagoya temporarily canceled evacuation warning it had issued 880,000 people for the possible overflow of a river, but authorities said it could be reactivated if necessary.

 
More than 200 domestic flights were canceled and suspended the service of some trains-shot.

 
Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's largest automaker, based in Aichi, Toyota City, closed its plant as a precaution.
