Two earthquakes of magnitude greater than 6 occurred on Wednesday off the coast of Japan triggering a small tsunami along the coast without causing further damage.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency reported a first tremor of magnitude 6.8 at 18H09 (09H09 GMT) 210 kilometers off the northeast coast, the hypocenter of the earthquake is located at a depth of 10 km only.
The agency had warned of a risk of tsunami with a maximum height of 50 inches on the coast of Aomori prefecture (northeast), Iwate (northeast) and Hokkaido (north), but the waves were between 10 and 20 cm in these areas without causing damage. The tsunami warning was lifted anti at 19h40.
Three hours after the first quake was a pretty powerful second quake of magnitude 6.1 according to the Agency.
The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 21h05 local (12h05 GMT) was located in the Pacific Ocean, near the east coast of Chiba Prefecture (eastern Tokyo). Its epicenter was 10 km deep.
The quake was felt across eastern Honshy and particularly in the prefectures of Chiba and Ibaraki (northeast of Tokyo). The quake also shook buildings in Tokyo.
The agency issued no tsunami warning.
Electric companies that manage nuclear power plants in those regions claimed that sites, where no reactor currently operates, undamaged individuals, even in central Fukushima, rough last year.
The tsunami alert in the north and northeast nevertheless prompted the authorities of Aomori and Iwate to advise residents of several localities along the coast to reach safe areas.
Some high-speed train Shinkansen and other regional have had to be stopped because of the quake, NHK public television said, citing the railways.
On March 11, 2011, an earthquake of magnitude 9 struck northeastern Japan, causing a giant tsunami that devastated cities and towns along the coast, left some 19,000 dead or missing and caused the largest nuclear accident in the world since 1986.
This historical earthquake caused a sharp increase in seismic activity in Japan, with more than 230 shocks of magnitude stronger in a year in the Northeast, a frequency 24 times higher than the annual average.
