At a time when Japan is preparing to leave behind a catastrophic year 2011, the refugees driven from their homes by the Fukushima nuclear accident are in no mood to celebrate a New Year which, they say, do not expect much.
On January 1 for the Japanese is one of the most important holidays and take advantage to meet her family, visiting temples and celebrate.
But this year will surely be sad for the tens of thousands of people forced from their homes within hours when the nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi radioactive particles began to expel after passage of the giant tsunami of March 11.
Many of the 1,000 refugees were housed in a 36-story building in Tokyo confess that the mind is not for celebration, after the terrible months have just experienced.
The magnitude 9 earthquake that triggered a massive tsunami off the coast of northeastern Japan, also caused 20,000 dead and missing.
In previous years, the families of Yuji Takahashi, a retired teacher of 68 years, met at his home in Tomioka, 6 km from the NPP, to drink sake or taste the dishes of "osechi" traditionally prepared for the New Year with vegetables from the garden.
"It was so good, so happy, but this year we can not. My life changed completely (...) almost wish that the government told us that we can never again return to our homes. I try to prepare for the worst."
Japan announced that the decommissioning of the reactors damaged by the tsunami could take 40 years and some areas near the site could remain uninhabitable for decades.
Shigeko Sasaki, whose house in Nami was swept by the tsunami, is angry against the government that has stayed in a building overlooking the Bay of Tokyo.
"I have fear of water," he says. "Why (the government) set us up so near the sea?
Since then, 61 year old woman has been accustomed to look at the sea that ruined his life. But you can not stop seeing the future bleak.
In mid December, the Prime Minister announced that Yoshihiko Noda Fukushima reactors were under control. As a result, by April the government will proceed to a redistribution of living areas around the plant in terms of levels of radioactivity.
But Kozo Misawa, 69, whose house and restaurant are located in an area that could again be considered "habitable" is not happy because, he says, communities that lived there were destroyed.
"It's easy for the government say: 'It's settled, you can go home', but how can we recover our old life?"
Misawa thinks that even if the area is again open, many shops, restaurants and hospitals that are the soul of a city could be closed.
"It's hard not knowing where we live," says Misawa, who has not yet decided whether to return to his home in Minamisoma, in the next six months.
This year, even resigned to send letters of greeting for the New Year, although it is a highly respected tradition in Japan.
"We're in the mood to write" Happy New Year, "she confides.
